Protestant Temple

Protestant Temple

Located on the hill side of the town, the Protestant Temple is the only one in France still in place presenting a rectilinear facade rounded at both ends. It is also the only known example in France (with that of the Shield of Strasbourg) built in the shape of private mansion, without doubt not to attract the glances. The interior conception corresponds to the Calvinist ideals of counting but also of equality between the faithfuls and their ministers: no platforms, no nave.

Built in1787 the temple is the oldest Protestant temple in the North of Languedoc (outside Alsace and Moselle). French Ionic style columns support a triangular front wall as a typical model of classic art style at the end of the 18th century.
The Temple hosts a number of services throughout the year and is registered on the additional inventory of historic monuments since 1977.
